Setting Up The Nursery

Setting up the nursery is an exciting way to prepare for the arrival of your new baby. You want it to look great, be functional, and contain all the products you need to care for your baby and you. You don't need a huge budget in order to create a stylish room, just a few key items, plus some toys and books and your nursery will be perfect.

Cot Or Bassinet

In the first year your baby will spend most of their day asleep. Whether you choose a cot or a bassinet (or both), ensure it is safe and comfortable for your baby. If you choose a bassinet for your baby, you won't need a cot for the first few months.

A bassinet is smaller and ideal for a newborn up to 6 months old. The benefit of a bassinet is that it can be easily moved from room to room, allowing you to keep a close eye on your sleeping baby. It is also a great idea if you plan on having your baby sleep in your room.

A cot can be used from birth until the child is 2-3 years old, some cots can also be converted into a toddler or day bed, providing longer use and greater value for money.

Change Table

A newborn requires about 12 nappy changes a day, therefore you want nappy changing to be as safe and efficient as possible. A change table holds all the supplies you need, including nappies, wipes, wash cloths and creams; making nappy changing that much easier. The height of a change table means you won't have to reach or lean too far, which is a consideration if you suffer from back pain.

An alternative option, that is smaller and often less expensive, is a cushioned change pad. This can be used on top of any flat surface, whether it be a dresser, table or even the floor - a change pad has the benefit of being moved easily from room to room.

Chair

A chair is a great item to have in the nursery, it enables you to feed and soothe your baby; especially during late-night feeds. Look for one with padded armrests and a wider base, it needs to comfortably fit you and your baby as well as extra cushions and a nursing pillow. An ottoman or footstool may also help with comfort. As your child grows, you can use the chair for reading stories and hugs.

Storage Spaces

The more storage space you have the better. Babies grow quickly and before you know it they'll have a room full of nappies, blankets, clothes, toys, books and more.

Drawers

A big set of drawers for clothes is ideal, and also a great place for storing additional blankets, wraps, nappies and other products like a thermometer, soother and hairbrush.

Side Table

A side table is very handy to have next to the nursery chair, where you can place items you might need, including your water bottle, mobile phone, snacks and tissues. A table with a drawer is recommended as you can keep items hidden from little hands using a security latch.

Shelves And Bookshelves

Bookshelves are perfect for books and toys, and you'll likely acquire a lot of these over the years. Shelves are also a good idea, they're out of your child's reach, so a great place for photo frames, keepsakes or jewellery boxes.

Lamp

A lamp is a great idea as you'll spend many hours feeding, comforting and holding your baby, especially when they're not well. The light should be bright enough so you can read a book or instructions on medicine packaging, but not too bright as it might be difficult to get your baby back to sleep. A floor standing or side table lamp are both good options.
