Plastic change tables feature shelves and wheels, and often contain a baby bath under the change surface. These tables are easy to clean and offer all the storage space you need. Having wheels you can easily move to other areas of the house, including the bathroom for bathing.
Wooden change tables feature drawers or shelves and some have wheels, which make them easily moved to other areas of the house. These tables are very sturdy and can be co-ordinated with other nursery furniture. A change mat or pad is also required to provide a soft surface for changing.
Change pads and mats have elevated sides and can be placed on any flat surface, including a change table, floor or drawers. Often less expensive than a change table, these can be easily moved around the house; however, they do not have storage options for nappies, wipes and creams.
The change table should be strong and stable with raised sides at least 10cm high to prevent roll off.
The change table should be free of hazards, including sharp edges or gaps.
Allow for plenty of storage space for nappies and all the extras you might need, e.g cloths, creams, safety pins and nappy disposable system.
Check the height, make sure you don't have to bend or reach too far.
If you plan on moving the change table around, e.g. from nursery to bathroom or to your room, make sure at least 2 of the wheels have lockable breaks. Ensure the wheels are locked before you change your baby.
Ensure surfaces of the change table can be easily wiped down when messes happen, this includes the mattress or padding.
Some changing tables convert into other furniture items, such as drawers which give you years of extra use.
