Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Nine New Zealand women, on average, will hear the news today that they have breast cancer.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer for Kiwi women and the third most common cancer overall. More than 650 women will likely die of the disease this year. And yet 30% of eligible women aren’t enrolled in free screening and 60% of young woman don’t know the signs beyond a lump.

Farmers stores nationwide are supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month during October to help educate women around the country about Breast Cancer and raise vital funds for the Breast Cancer foundation NZ.

Breast Cancer awareness for early detection

In October 2020, Breast Cancer Foundation NZ, together with broadcaster & breast cancer survivor Sarah Gandy, launched the nationwide Change and Check campaign.
Change & Check stickers raise awareness about breast cancer and the importance of knowing the signs and symptoms.
By displaying these in our changing rooms, we are helping to spread the powerful message that early diagnosis saves lives.
Save your Life

How well do you know your own Breasts?

How well do you know your own breasts? Is one normally bigger than the other? Is it normal that they’re sometimes really sore and a little lumpy? When was the last time you checked your breasts?

Breast cancer is most treatable when it is found early, so early detection is your best protection. That’s why it’s vital to know the signs and ‘know your normal’ – and if you notice any changes, see your doctor immediately.

Pre Check App

Pre Check is a wellbeing tool for women in New Zealand. It’s an innovation that empowers women by giving them confidence to take control of their own breast health.

Visual, tactile and audio cues help you search for signs of breast cancer on your mobile. When you find one, you can learn more about it before looking for other signs

Once you’ve found the signs of breast cancer, you are prompted to “get to know your normal”. We teach you how to self-check via an easy-to-follow illustrated guide.

You have the option to set your own reminder for regular self-checks. This will send a push-notification to your phone, urging you to ‘touch, look and check’ and reminding you how."

Early detection is the best protection

Women have a 95% chance of surviving breast cancer five years or longer if the cancer is detected by a mammogram.
Because the risk of breast cancer increases as you get older, BCFNZ recommends women consider having regular screening from age 40.

You can book your mammogram by phoning 0800 270 200 or go to timetoscreen.nz
